While the „Porto Antico“ in Genoa is used as ferry port the freight traffic has been banished to the recently built container port outside the city. Because of the many ferry connections from Genoa to other Italian or French ports like e.g. Genoa Palermo or the ferries to Sardinia with the shipping company “Grandi Navi Veloci” there is always a lot of hurly-burly at the quay. Especially in the summer months many tourists use the ferry to Genoa or from Genoa towards their holiday destination.
Genoa’s port has an old tradition
Genoa’s port “Il porto Antico” has always been one of the most important shipping locations of the Mediterranean. One of its characteristics is the exposed position, only a stone’s throw away from the busy Old Town.
Visitors who come to Genoa by ferry only have to cross one street and they are amidst the narrow and picturesque small streets. For a long time the waterfront area has been said to be an obscure quarter, where one shouldn’t get lost. But since its reconstruction and the costly restoration of many dilapidated buildings the harbour promenade is again one of Genoa’s attractions tourists shouldn’t miss.

No matter if you are an art or architecture lover, if you fancy fashion or if you are a fan of “Dolce Vita”, in Genoa you will certainly find suitable attractions. The roomy Old Town with its narrow streets that cover about 400,000 square meters is a special attraction. The “Strade Nuove” with the famous “Palazzi di Rolli”, which are palaces built in the 16th and 17th century and which had been included in the UNESCO world heritage list, are situated right in the middle.
