Ferry Harbour Kiel
Ferry Kiel
The Firth of Kiel
Because of its position at the Kiel Canal the city of Kiel looks back on a tradition of navigation. The large passenger ships of many international shipping companies belong to the cityscape. In regular intervals a ferry leaves from Kiel direction North or Northeast. There is also a ferry from Kiel to Oslo. The crossing takes about 20 hours. Another ferry leaves from Kiel and drops anchor at Goteborg in Sweden.
Many cruises leave from Kiel to destinations all over the world. The port does not only have to be mentioned in connection with tourism but also because of its importance as a freight harbor. Moreover, the port of Kiel is the main base of the German navy.
There are many places of interest in the university town Kiel
Although there is always the focus on the port when talking about Kiel, however, there is another life besides ships, water and quays and that is quite impressive, because Kiel with its estimated 230,000 inhabitants is a large town where art, culture and entertainment play an important role as well. As a university town Kiel houses many young people. This shows in the townscape as well as in the pubs and restaurants.
Moreover, there is a remarkable night life in Kiel. During the summer months life takes place under the open sky as in nearly all other European countries. The seaside resorts nearby like Schwedeneck or Schilksee are very popular. The old botanic garden with its unique historic tree population or the museums contrast to the landscape and the shipping business.
