Harbour Ajaccio Information
Ferry Ajaccio
Despite a lot of tourism Corse has kept its special charm
Corse is considered to be France's pearl of the Mediterranean. Not only domestic tourists from the French mainland visit this lovely island but also people from all over the world. Especially during the summer months from june to august there is a lot of bustle on Corse. The one who is interested in spending his holidays on Corse has two alternatives to get there: either by plane or by car ferry.
For the travel by sea one of the possible ports of destination is Ajaccio on the western coast of the island. This location reached prominence as Napoleon's birthplace. Moreover, Ajaccio is not only the destination of the ferries but is also the capital of the department Corse-du-Sud, the southern part of Corse. This proves that the port of Ajaccio is not only important with regard to the ferries to Ajaccio but also with regard to its political and economic significance as it is the second largest commercial harbout of the island. Many of the about 63,000 inhabitants of Ajaccio work in or around the harbour.
Ajaccio is an important junction of the island
During the whole year Ajaccio can be reached by ferry from the French mainland, e.g. from Marseille, Toulon or Nice. During the high season there are also ferries from other locations of the island, e.g. Bastia and Calvi as well as a ferry from the neighbour island Sardinia. Depending on their preferences most of the visitors to Corse stay only a short time in Ajaccio to continue their trip to the favourite south of the island or to visit the tourist attractions around. The one who comes to the island without a car can continue his trip from Ajaccio, which is called Aiacciu in Corsican, by train.
Right next to the port there is the station of the Corsican railway. Who comes to Corse by car has to take into consideration that the road network outside the bigger towns is sometimes rather bad. Tourists are strongly advised not to travel overland by caravan.
