Harbour Ancona
Ferries Ancona
Ancona is one of the important ferry ports in the Mediterranean
Many tourists who want to go to Greece or Croatia know Ancona from a stopover. Like no other location Ancona stands for comfortable journeys by ferry. Since decades this city at the coast of the Adriatic Sea has housed an ever growing ferry port that is used as a hub of many passenger and freight ships on their mediterranean route. A heavily frequented route is the ferry from Ancona to Patras in Greece. But not only the harbour and the ferries made Ancona famous but also its eventful history.
The eventful history of Ancona
Especially interesting is the Lazaretto dating from the 18th century. Originally the pentagonal building which has about 20,000 square meters was built as a retreat for the soldiers in order to be protected against illness and epidemics. Later on the building still served military purposes. The cathedral and the fortress on the Monte Astagno as well as numerous gothic buildings in the city centre have a special appeal. Some historians suppose that the sanctuary of the Venus was located in Ancona. The ten columns in the cathedral which stem from an early Venus temple are supposed to prove this. Moreover, Venus is known to be the tutelary goddess of this city. As the Ancona port is centrally located the city tour can be started from there by foot or car. If there's no interest in the traces of the eventful history, one can take the opportunity to rest in one of the many small cafés or restaurants to get in the mood for the journey by ferry from Italy to Greece or Croatia.
