Bastia Ferry
Travel to Corsica
Most of the visitors to Corsica decide deliberately to take the ferry to Corsica as this way of travelling has a lot of advantages: one can bring his own car, thus being independent on the island and the passage is remarkably cheaper than a flight, above all for families with children. Additionally, there are a lot of ferry connections to Bastia, e.g. Marseille Bastia, Nice Bastia, Genoa Bastia or Livorno Bastia. Thus, one can start the vacation from several locations in Italy and France. The different shipping companies like Moby Lines or Corsica Sardinia Ferries are very busy especially in summertime because there is a lot of traffic in the port of Bastia from June to August.
Discovering Bastia
With its estimated 400,000 inhabitants Bastia is the capital of Upper-Corsica, the Corsican north. Its port is said to be the most important of the island, even more important than that of Ajaccio in the south. It is situated at the bottom of a mountain and is sourrounded by a lot of green hills and a steep coast. Bastia’s historical port “Port de Plaisance” is really worth visiting. Nowadays only small boats can dock there. Passenger and freight ships leave from “Nouveau Port”, the new port which is further north.
Because everything is in comfortable reach, Bastia’s other places of interest can be discovered on a walk through the city. Among them, the picturesque Old Town with its fortress, the Governor’s Palace and Saint-Nicolas-Square in the center where the locals meet to play boules. Around the square there are a lot of nice cafés and restaurants where one can taste the Corsican gastronomic specialties.
