Traces of the Vikings and whaling
Sandefjord is a paradise for lovers of old Nordic legends and mythology and of Vikings. The king’s grave site Gokstadhaugen and the square Kaupang in Skirinssal that was used for doing business are the most important relicts of the Vikings.
The history of whaling can be felt and experienced in Sandefjord, too. In 1850 the town became a whaling center.
At the beginning of the 20th century whaling has reached its climax and was discontinued in 1967/1968.
In the meantime there has only remained the whaling museum that specializes in the history of whaling. At the Museum’s Wharf a reconstructed whale-catcher can be admired.
