Until 1873 Zadar was a fortress

Churches are the heritage sites of Zadar
Four gates lead into the town at the Adriatic Sea. In addition, Zadar is divided into four quarters. One place of interest is the Cathedral of St. Anastasia. The altars made of marble and the beautiful paintings are the special features of this church. It was built in the 13th century as a Roman Basilica. In general, the churches and the Convent of St. Mary are Zadar’s most important heritage sites.
The former Church of the Holy Trinity is now a museum of antiques. It is the eldest church of the town. It is said that it was built as early as in the 9th century upon the ruins of a temple of Juno. Nature lovers get recreation in one of the 4 national parks which are close to Zadar.
